Apple announces 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 chip for AI boost

Apple has announced a new Apple 14-inch MacBook Pro featuring the powerful M5 chip. The company says that this delivers a huge leap in AI performance.

Improved AI performance

Apple’s M5 chip features an advanced CPU, GPU, and faster Neural Engine. Its next-generation 10-core GPU has a Neural Accelerator in each core. As a result, it delivers up to 3.5x faster AI performance than the M4 and up to 6x faster performance than an M1. The M5’s faster 16-core Neural Engine also accelerates on-device, AI-driven tasks and enhances the performance of the generative models that power Apple Intelligence. In addition, the new 14-inch MacBook Pro offers 2x faster SSD performance than the prior generation, so you can load a local LLM (large language model) faster.

Faster systemwide performance

Apple says that the new GPU in the M5 chip delivers up to 1.6x faster graphics performance in pro apps. It also enables up to 1.6x higher frame rates in games compared to the M4 model.

The M5 CPU features the world’s fastest CPU core for even more responsiveness. The 10-core design delivers up to 20 percent faster multithreaded performance versus M4 for workloads like code compiling. It’s perfect for multitasking or speeding through creative applications as well.

Benchmarks

Apple says that the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 delivers up to 7.7x faster AI video-enhancing performance in Topaz Video when compared to the 13‑inch MacBook Pro with M1. It’s also nearly twice as fast as the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4. Additionally, it offers up to 6.8x faster 3D rendering in Blender when compared to the 13‑inch MacBook Pro with M1. Compared to the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4, the new M5 MacBook Pro is up to 1.7x faster.

Other features

The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 features an industry-leading Liquid Retina XDR display with a nano-texture option. This also offers 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness and up to 1,000 nits of brightness for SDR content. The battery in the new MacBook Pro delivers up to 24 hours of use from a single charge. You can fast charge to 50 percent in just 30 minutes using a 96 W or higher USB-C power adapter as well.

Also, the new MacBook Pro has an advanced 12 MP Center Stage camera, studio-quality mics and an immersive six-speaker sound system with support for Spatial Audio.

What we think

The M5 is the latest in the M-series line of Apple silicon chips and promises to deliver unrivaled levels of performance for AI processes. It will also deliver outstanding performance for video editing and VFX work. Additionally, the bright 1,600 nits Liquid Retina display means that you can see your screen in all lights, so you can work anywhere. With a phenomenal 24-hour battery life, you won’t need to worry about finding a power source very often, either. As with all Apple products, the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 commands a premium price. However, its advanced features and levels of performance make it ideal for anyone who works with video.

Pricing and availability

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 starts at $1,599 and is available in space black and silver. The basic model includes 16 GB Unified Memory and 512 GB SSD storage.
