Adobe CEO steps downs after 18 years

Adobe’s CEO, Shantanu Narayen, has announced he is going to step down after serving in the role for 18 years. He revealed his decision in a message to Adobe employees on the company’s website news page this week.

What is Shantanu Narayen?

Shantanu Narayen moved from India to the United States to complete his master’s degree in computer science. After achieving his qualification in 1986, he joined a Silicon Valley startup called Measurex Automation Systems. Narayen also worked for Apple from 1989 to 1995, and then Silicon Graphics.

Also, in 1996, he co-founded a company called Pictra Inc. that that pioneered the concept of digital photo sharing over the internet. Narayen first joined Adobe in 1998 as senior vice president of worldwide product development. After a successful career at Adobe, he was appointed president and CEO in 2005.

In his message, Narayen described leading Adobe as “the greatest honor of my career”. He also highlighted that, over his 28 years at Adobe, the company grew from 3,000 to over 30,000 employees. At the same time, Adobe’s revenue has grown from under $1 billion to over $25 billion. In addition, Narayen emphasized the role of AI in Adobe’s future. He said, “The next era of creativity is being written right now — shaped by AI, by new workflows and by entirely new forms of expression. Adobe has never waited for the future to arrive. We’ve anticipated it. We’ve built it. And we’ve led it”.

What next?

Narayen has said that he will remain as CEO until a successor is identified to ensure a smooth transition. He is also going to work with Frank Calderoni, Adobe’s lead Director, and the Board of Directors, to help choose the next CEO.

Additionally, Narayen isn’t going to be leaving Adobe completely. He explained that he will stay on as Chair of the Board to support the next CEO as his predecessors did for him.

What we think

Shantanu Narayen has been a very successful CEO at Adobe. The company has continued to grow under him and maintained its position as a market leader. Adobe’s recent business figures, as reported by Fortune.com, continue to impress. In the first quarter of the year, subscription revenue grew by 13% along with record first-quarter cash flow of $2.96 billion.

Adobe is expected to exceed analyst forecasts for share earnings and revenue in the second quarter. However, Wall Street has expressed concerns that AI might reduce demand for traditional software such as Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite of programs. Narayen’s successor may therefore face some difficult challenges in the years ahead.
