Tamron launched its 25-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 (Model A075) all-in-one zoom lens for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Now the company has issued a firmware update that improves the macro performance of the lens.
Firmware update
Tamron released Version 3.00 on July 29, 2026. Maximum magnification across the 25-70 mm range now reaches 1:2 (half-macro) or better.
At the wide end, that isn’t the news. The lens already managed 1:1.9 at 25mm when it launched. The gain lives everywhere else in that range, and it’s biggest in the middle.
Improvement at 50mm
Before the update, 50 mm topped out at 1:3.1. Version 3.00 takes the 35-50mm range to 1:1.7, past half-macro and better than the lens ever managed at 25 mm. Tamron has shared before-and-after frames that show the jump.
The raw number undersells it. Hitting 1:1.9 used to mean shooting at 25mm, which left almost no working distance. Getting 1:1.7 at 50 mm lets you stay farther from the subject, so you’re less likely to throw your own shadow across it or stretch perspective, and 50 mm looks more natural to begin with.
Don’t expect the same at the long end. Element geometry and focus travel limits rule out similar gains at 200 mm.

Main features
The 25-200mm is built from 18 elements in 14 groups, with Tamron’s BBAR-G2 coating to hold down ghosting and flare. Focus runs on the company’s VXD linear motor, which Tamron calls its fastest and most precise to date. The catch for video is the variable aperture. Zoom from 25 mm to 200 mm and you drop two full stops, so a push-in mid-take shifts exposure unless you ride it manually.
What we think
Free performance is rare. Tamron didn’t patch a bug here, it moved a spec, and the 50 mm result is genuinely useful for anyone grabbing b-roll of products, food or texture without carrying a dedicated macro.
The working distance is the real win. A lens that focuses close at 25 mm sounds good on a spec sheet and fights you on set, because at that range your camera blocks your own light. Pulling that capability out to 50 mm makes it something you’d actually use on a shoot. If you own this lens, run the update.
