Fujifilm’s GFX 100 and GFX 50R Have Huge Sensors and Price Tags to Match

Photokina 2018 has brought us two new medium format mirrorless cameras from Fujifilm. The GFX 50R and GFX 100 both sport large sensors and are powered by Fujifilm’s Super Full Frame system.

Fujifilm claims the concept camera — the GRX 100 — would be the world’s first mirrorless shooter with a 100-megapixel sensor, while the GFX 50R is a follow-up to Fujifilm’s GFX 50S, which was released in 2017. It features the same 51.4-megapixel sensor, 100-12,800 ISO range, a 400-shot battery capacity and a weather-sealed body. That all may sound good to you, but the price may not. The 50S was $6,500 when it was launched, so it’s likely the 50R will have a similar price.

What is different?

This is not to say the 50S and 50R are the same camera. Fujifilm’s added some new features and upgrades to the formula. The biggest change is the new OLED electronic viewfinder with a 3.69 million dot resolution.

Bluetooth connectivity has been added as well and the camera’s overall design is actually smaller and lighter than that of its predecessor. Engadget compares the camera’s design to Fujifilm’s X-E3.

As for the 50R, it’s seemingly a lot less of a hassle to hold in your hand compared to the 50S. Know that the actual weight of the camera is still 775 grams, but what makes the difference is its smaller form factor.

Video shooting on the GFX 50R

Sorry, still no 4K! The 50R maxes out at 1080p video at 30 frames per second. While a hybrid camera, we think a lot of videographers would be disappointed about the lack of 4K, even with the 51.4-megapixel sensor.

The GFX100’s video shooting is a different story

The GFX100, still in development, promises 4K video at 30 frames per second with in-body image stabilization. However, Fujifilm says the camera would cost around $10,000 — definitely out of reach for a majority of camera users.

Still, Fujifilm’s claiming the camera would be the to produce 4K movies in a medium format mirrorless. The company’s also saying the GFX 100 will be the first medium format mirrorless camera with a 100-megapixel sensor.

Pricing and Availability

The GFX100 and GFX 50R will be pricey. That’s something that will drive a lot of shooters away — in addition to the lack of 4K video on the 50R. However, there could be an audience for these two. The 50R will be priced at $4,500 and released in late November. As for the GFX100, Fujifilm said the camera will likely retail for about $10,000, but release details are slim.
