      Hey guys,

I'm wanting to invest in some nicer sound than my 650D's onboard mic. So do you think I should get the Rode Videomic Pro, or the Rode videomic and a zoom H1. The two combos are both the same price, but idk what will produce better sound. Or should I go for the Rode Vidoemic Pro AND the zoom H1? Thanks

I have a rode shotgun mike and a zoom H2 and use both, the shot gun style mike can be used if you are distant from your subject and want to eliminate outside sounds base on the narrow width of the shotgun mikes range, while the zoom can be attached tothe camera with a wider range of pickup, plus you can use it as an independent feld recorder to pick up foley , outside sounds you might need for your productions

The pro videomic is smaller and doesn’t have a squeaky suspension.

I have been using the rode shot gun mike for a couple of years and It eats batteries but has never caused a problem with a squeaky suspention.

You can find pix of the videomic old style and the new pro version. On the old one you will note how the shotgun is suspended. While the camera is motionless the suspension makes no noise, but start moving the camera an you will begin to hear the squeaks of the mic moving in the elastic suspension. Only a big deal if you intend to move and shoot or interview on the run. The pro is smaller too which is really nice.

cinomeister – Since you have a 650D with manual gain control, and not a 600D, with its terrible automatic gain, I would get the Videomic pro right now and set my gain manually – and then save up for the H1 and a Sescom LN2MIC cable.  With the Sescom, you can plug your Rode into the H1 and then plug the H1's output into your 650D, giving you both a high quality 24-bit external track and a backup in-camera track.

      Cheers,

Do you think I should get the Pro Rode for 100 more bucks, or do you think the videomic standard is good enough? I think i'll get the pro, and then later on get the zoom, but idk.
