A friend is offering a used Sony Professional HVR-Z1U 3CCD High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom, how much should I pay for it? Thanks for your input!

I'd pay about $1000. 3CCD cameras are kind of going the way of the dodo, and HDV isn't the best format (it's actually 1440×1080 interlaced footage), but you'll get a lot of functionality out of that camera. Built in ND filters are nice. XLR in is nice.

What would you be using it for?

I've seen them used going for 1,400-1,600, so 1,000-1,600 depending on condition and what came with it. That camera is getting to be older tech but the Z1U was a workhorse. Great outdoor camera and very tough.

check ebay for completed auctions where similar models sold, that will give you a ball park. 3CCDs are nice, no rolling shutter issues.and the camera has some body to it which is nice.
