distored video effects clips

I downloaded several effects clips from Production Crate, but some do not play properly and I can’t figure out why (neither can they) Several of the lightning and lightning-ish effects look fine on the website, but become blobs when I download them. I’ve tried playing them in Quicktime, MPC, and VLC. I’ve dropped them onto my timeline in Vegas Pro but they all look blobish. P.S. Those are supposed to be lightning bolts.
