So, you know how to use your focus controls to get your image sharp, and you know how to use light, filters, and the exposure triangle to get proper exposure. Now its time to combine the techniques to control your depth of field. Depth of field refers to the area in front and behind your point of focus that is perceptibly sharp. Shallow depth of field describes a shot where very little in front and behind your subject is in focus, and this technique can be used to draw the viewers eye, or to hide unwanted background elements. Deep depth of field describes a shot where a large area in front and behind your point of focus is perceptibly sharp. Understanding what depth of field is may be a simple concept, but controlling it… now that’s another story.
