Participantxmp files as it pertians to still photography is this…little files that are attached to your image files (oft referred to as sidecar files) that the camera writes. metadata. these files contain exif data for your editing software. With a still camera, that data may tell your software which way your camera was oriented (horizontal or vertical) which lens, aperture, white balance setting, flash, shooting mode. (and more).
some software ignores some of that data, other software uses it.
I’d imagine that the xmp files for a video clip, would work the same way. at the very least it must be used for organising the clips, in camera, and so your computer can identify enough info about the clip to sort it out without having to open it up.

Participantyou could experiment and try moving/renaming one and see what happens….
just don’t throw it away/erase it til your sure….
then let us all know what happens!
