  I am really new to shooting video. I have a HV20 Canon.
  
  This may sound dumb, but what is the square adaptor that goes on the outside of lense? They are on professional cameras, but not on consumers.

  some are simple lens hoods, some may be matte boxes for mounting filters etc…
