Trouble with the sound on archival DV tapes

I’m have audio dropouts with the sound portion of my older DV tapes – video plays fine. Any thoughts about salvaging the audio?

One problem might be that the original recordings were made on an early JVC which is now long dead. Now I’ve tried to play back on a small canon and a nice panasonic and have problems on both.

Rather than something on the heads it seems like there is something on the tape itself.? Does that make any sense?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks Hank,

Yeah, after recording the audio was fine but five years on this is happening. Some of the audio is difficult to bear losing so I keep hoping for a fix.
