I’m new to the video editing world, I have a camera (canon XL2) and I want to buy a new computer to edit my videos, I want to produce some DVDs for some friends (about 1 hour of video), I currently have a few Dell precision workstations and the most powerful one has 2GB of memory and a dual PIII 933mhz and 3 SCSI HD.
I was looking at 2 new machines (dual g5 2.5 with 4GB of memory and a Nvidia card ultra DDL with 256MB of video memory) and a (PC with Dual P4 Xeon 3.6mhz with 4GB of memory and a Nvidia FX 3400 video card) both computers are running around 10k.
I just selected the best configuration possible but I don’t know if I need all that, I don’t have a problem buying the computer, but I don’t want to wast money ider.
Can anybody setup a perfect computer configuration that I could buy, I don’t care if it is a Mac or PC, I just don’t want to spend 1ok if I can do the job well done with 5k.
i work with graphics but never done video, I have no idea if the 4GB of Ram is enough or to much and all that stuuf..
Thank you very much.

From your two options it appears that money is not a problem. Have you looked at systems manufactured by companies that specialize in equipment for video editing? Not the cheapest way to go, but serious hardware if you can afford it. some places to look would include (but of course not limited to):
there are others, these were just a quick google search

Ok, I decied to use the AVID Express Pro software and had some credit left on my DELL account so I looked on AVID’d website a compatible workstation to work with the software.
The computer is:
Dell Precison Workstation 670 w/:
Dual Xeon 3.0Ghz
3 Gb or Ram
126GB SATA HD (boot)
400GB SATA HD (video) no RAID
128MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro FX 1300, Dual DVI or Dual VGA or DVI + VGA Dual 19″ flat Panel LCD monitor w/ DVI (Free with the selected workstation)
Ok, and the camera that we’re going to be using with this baby is the
HVRZ1U 3CCD 1080i HDV Camcorder (I placed the order today but delivery in Feb. 2005) for now we’re going to be using my XL2.
Now I need suggestions:
I need a good set of Speakers
A Good Headphone
Should I get the Special Keyboard?
Should I have a 15″ professional monitor (TV Monitor)?
Do I need Extra Lenses for this camera? ( wide angle, etc.)
Please help me…
