SDR-S50 – without sd reader/writer?

Thinking of getting the SDR-S50 but my laptop does not have an SD slot… Can I use the supplied USB cable to download videos from the camcorder? If so, what drawbacks vs. actually moving the SD card from camcorder to PC itself for downloading.
fyi/the sdr-s50 manual does show sd card reader/writer as an “other requirement”…

your laptop should accept USB SD readers. I have a little nGEAR USB2 Card reader that accepts SD/MS/CF and X cards.
