If I am videotaping an event of people or use a video from any one person at an event do I need a model release and if so how do I get one?
If you are in a public place such as a park, the street or any other publicly owned property then you dont need a release. Otherwise search online for a standard model release form.
It’s always good to CYA when videotaping in public.
Obviously, if you’re videotaping hundreds of people, it would be near to impossible to get them all to sign a form, so what you can do is make several signs that state that you are videotaping in the area and being in the area constitutes acceptance that they may show up on video, television, etc.
As far as on camera talent, while your recording, and before you ask questions, or do whatever it is you’re doing, all you have to say is “Do you mind if we videotape you?”, and as long as you’ve got their verbal ok on tape, then you’re covered.
And, as stated earlier, there are model release forms online.
