when i capture in premiere it segments the file into multiple avi’s rather than a single avi. I looked in manual, help file and online, and cannot find a solution to this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

      Try turning Screne Detection off.

In case you haven’t found where to turn off scene detection, it’s File->Capture. In the capture window, open the flyout option under Setting on the right hand side. Select Scene Detect.

Also don’t try to capture long durations (30 to 60 mins.) Break your capture up into 10 minute segments. this will creat more manable file sizes.

Make sure you capture some pre and post roll when splitting a long capture, that way you can be absolutly sure that you didn’t miss a frame or two when splitting the clip. Just line them up in the player and mathematicaly trim them to match.
