Hi – I have a Panasonic DVX100b and usually use a wireless lav mic under fairly controlled conditions. Does a camera-mounted XLR mic produce results as good as the wireless when the camera is within 2-5 feet of the subject? I’d hate to spend $300 and find out it’s not much better than the built-in!
Thanks for the excellent info. Ya know, this is what I like about this board – smart people who give the right answers based on experience.
One would think that the shock mount from a mic manufacturer would have sufficient dampening. I guess not! But it makes sense that you’d need some. On a lav mic, I noticed that if someone even brushes up against the wire 2 feet downstream from the mic, it is quite audible.
Reducing sensitivity helped that. Anyhow, I think the shotgun mic will be a great improvement over the camera mounted mic which is sorta useless.
