Technically challenged, so please spell out all those acronyms!
I’m cutting with an older version of Avid on aMac 867 Quicksilver, OS 9.2. I want to author(with menu, chapters, etc),and duplicateDVDs maintianing the highest quality (signal?) as possible(given my current format: DVCAM).The Avid will not operate properly on OSX (tired that),and OS9 will not support any authoring software curently available; so even if I could install a DVD burner (or use a desktop burner), the authoring option would not be possible.
I have a large library of DVCAM stock that I want to cut butanticipate eventually moving to HD.
I can output SDI, compontent(same?), composite from the Avid breakout box or frommy Sony DSR 1800 record deck.
Plan A)First attempted to network with an existing PC using “DAVE classic” from Thursby; created a QuickTime file, successfullyexportedto the PC -but only had audio, understand that the codec needs to be changed before the videocan successfully be imported -with the intention of authoringand burning viathird party software.Realized thatthe PC(Demension 4700, Intel(R),Pentium (R)4CPU,3.20GHz,3.19Ghz,512MB RAMwith only 6gigs hd availablewouldn’t be(?) adequatefor this operationso went to plan B…
Pan B)Loaded Adobe Prremiere 8 onto PC XPS 210 (Intel(R) Core(TM)Duio CPU E4500@2.20GHz,2.19GHz,2.00GB of RAM with WDM Video for Win Capture Driver(Win32), Optiarc DVD+-RW AD5540A, Display adapters Radeon X1300, 200gigs hd available.
It crashed after the 1st 30 seconds of attempted capture. I then went on to log 21 crash events(from 30 sec to 15 min) before getting bored with that and simply continued to capture (via firewire), repeatedly stopping the capture frequently, atlogical points, rather than losinglong segments of the show and havingto start over again. I only pursued thisbecasue I had promised to get a project out tosomeone, and wanted to burn it toDVD.
Adobe Tech supportsuggested upgrading myvideo card. I downloaded the max upgrade to the X1500 series. No help. AMD suggested a 4000 or 5000 card….
I did cut a 3 scene segment to test the DVD burning results – no luck, “Device not suitable for bruning this DVD. Save the quick Time file to a folder and tried to burn it with Nero…no luck there. Called Dell, they assumed I needed a new DVD drive and are sending one my way.
This solution requires that I playback out of my PD150 via firewire – not an attractive option for obvious reasons -and purchasing a deck just to play firewire out, well, why bother…not a long term solution either.
Plan C)Get a new system with component inputs, authoring software and DVD burning capabilites.
