The Canon Vixia HV40 is unusual because it records onto DV tapes rather than a hard drive or flash memory, though this is often preferred by film-makers due to the higher quality and lack of compression of the footage. The fact that the tapes are a removable form of memory also make this an appealing option for many people, especially as there is a much reduced risk of losing your videos.
The external microphone is sufficient for the majority of users, though if you are after particularly high quality sound, then this will not be achieved with the Canon Vixia HV40. However, if you are looking to improve the sound quality, you are able to plug in an additional microphone so that the quality of the sound matches that of the image.
The camcorder is small and light, which makes it easily portable and comfortable to use for extended periods of time. However, due to its size, some of the controls can be a little too close together to use easily. The controls present are limited compared to those on a larger camcorder, but this is a compromise in order to achieve the small size of the Vixia HV40. The glossy black design also helps to give the camcorder a more professional appearance, which can be an important consideration for some users.
The Canon Vixia HV40 comes with a built in flash, and has a 10x zoom lens. The manual focus controls are a little awkward at first, though this is mainly because they are different to those used on the majority of camcorders.
This camcorder offers high quality footage at a low price, and would be suitable for experienced amateurs.
