Cross-fades

For years, working with film, they were 'lap-dissolves', to me, but 'cross-fades' serves as well. Used responsibly, they may be part of your 'signature', as embodied in the way you go about your editing. However, I would caution against them being 'too-many-things'. Attempts to make them the universal panea for all shooting and editing ills, can be a big mistake in my view. I treat them as a form of 'encoding', to convey the passage of time and almost nothing else. That way preserves clarity, in viewers' minds,  as to what it is they are 'encoding'. A personal observation over the years, is that this transition is over-used by almost everyone; including, at one time, 'me'.
