Canon EOS-1D X Mark II

After a long wait, Canon has finally announced a 4K DSLR addition to their EOS line. This comes about a month after Nikon announced 2 4K DSLRs at CES: the Nikon D5 and D5000. Fortunately for Canon fans, the 1D X Mark II appears to be better suited for 4K video than either Nikon.

The complete specs are below, but the most important is clearly that the 1D X Mark II can record 4K at 60 fps for 29 minutes 59 seconds. By comparison, Nikon's direct competitor to the 1DX Mark II, the Nikon D5, can only record up to 30 fps and for just three minutes. The 1D X Mark II also records in DCI 4K (4096 x 2160p) versus the Nikon flagship's UHD 4K (3840 x 2160p), a big plus for filmmakers after that wide, cinematic aspect ratio.

Other notable features of the 1D X Mark II are ISO up to 204,800 for 4K video and 409,600 for stills, 120 fps for HD video, time code support and CFast 2.0 support. We are sad to see that the 1D X Mark II does not have an internal intervalometer.

Thankfully the sensor is unchanged at 36x24mm (full-frame).

Features we look forward to testing include the new Fine Detail picture mode, the hopefully greater impedance of the Line IN audio port and the faster, 802.11ac Wi-fI — possibly enabling 4K wireless transfer to mobile phones. Unfortunately the Wi-Fi transmitter is sold seperately.

Because the 1D X Mark II is Canon's flagship stills camera, we expect many of these features to roll out on lower-end DSLRs, including perhaps the 5D Mark IV. Video-centric shooters may twitch at the MSRP of $6,000, and for good reason. However, for the serious still shooter and financially blessed video shooters, the Canon 1D X Mark II will ship this April.
