Intel announces 13th Gen mobile processors at CES

Intel announced details of its new 13th Gen Intel Core mobile processors designed for laptops at CES 2023. In total, the company introduced 32 new processors aimed at a range of different uses.

24-core processor

The 13th Gen Intel Core H-series processors include the first 24-core processor designed for a laptop. The top-of-the-range Core i9-13980HX processor has 24 cores (eight performance cores, 16 Efficient-cores), 32 threads and enhanced Intel Thread Director. The 13th Gen HX processors also offer up to 5.6 GHz turbo frequency. Intel says that this is the highest clock speed available for the laptop market. This gives up to 11 percent faster single-thread performance, and 49 percent faster multitask performance compared to the previous generation.

Other H-series features

The 13th Gen Intel Core H-series processors support up to 128 GB DDR5 memory at speeds up to 5600 MHz and DDR4 memory up to 3200MHz. They also offer Intel Killer Wi-Fi 6E (Gig+) for up to six times faster internet speeds, along with Intel Bluetooth LE Audio and Bluetooth 5.2 with up to two times faster speeds. In addition, Thunderbolt 4 gives you transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps and connectivity to multiple 4K monitors and accessories.

P-series and U-series

Intel also introduced the 13th Gen Intel Core P-series and U-series mobile processors. These slightly lower specification processors are designed for use in thinner laptops which have less space for cooling systems. The P- and U-series processors come with up to 14 cores (six performance cores, eight efficient cores) and enhanced Intel Thread Director. They also have new Intel Iris Xe Graphics features, including endurance gaming, XeSS Super Sampling and Intel Arc Control.

Other features

The 13th Gen Intel Core P- and U-series processors support DDR5 and DDR4 memory. They also offer integrated Intel Wi-Fi 6E (Gig+) as well as new wireless features like Intel Connectivity Performance Suite, Intel Wi-Fi Proximity Sensing and Intel Bluetooth LE Audio. In addition, they support up to 4 Thunderbolt 4 ports.

What we think

Intel’s new 13th Gen mobile processors will deliver a new series of powerful laptops. This is great news for video makers who need to edit their footage or work on visual effects while on the move. The H-series processors, with support for up to 128 GB of memory, are an especially exciting prospect. No doubt they will come at a premium price, but if you edit your footage out in the field, the 13th Gen Intel Core mobile processors could be just what you need.
