This time on Tips and Tricks, we’re gonna show you how to do a simple effect using some simple camera tricks to show you how to get hit by a car. First up, grab a tri-pod and get two separate shots from the exact same viewpoint; one of a big vicious semi-truck driving through the frame and one of the subjects reaction to being decimated by a semi.

Next, we grab the last frame of our reaction clip and cut out the subject in Photoshop. We overlaid the cutout version on top of our semi shot, then we added a wipe transition between our last frame of the original reaction clip and our new version of the semi clip with the cutout of our subject. Since we filmed both clips from the same point of view, this blended the two tracks together so that they look like one solid shot.

Once again, without the wipe and overlay, our shot looked like this. With the overlay and wipe, it looks like this. Using key frames, we place our subject to the left of the semi. Over the course of the next four frames, we move the subject up and over until they were out of the shot entirely. This gives the effect that our subject is being pushed out of the frame. Our last step is to add foley.

Knowing how to use special effects is one thing. Camera tricks is another. This time, we’re gonna take a look at how you get hit by a car. By lining up our subject to stand ten feet in front of our vehicle, we compressed the perspective of the viewer. The sell here, again, is the addition of foley, our truck hitting the brakes, and the Oscar award winning acting of our subject. The main trick behind this version is to properly line up the camera to hide how far away the subject is from the car, which again, compresses the perspective and looks very realistic.
