NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct is the fastest NIKKOR lens yet

Nikon has just revealed the fastest NIKKOR lens ever made. The NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct takes inspiration from the Noct-NIKKOR 58mm f/1.2 lens.

The new lens is made exclusively as a manual focus prime lens. It comes racing in with a maximum aperture of f/0.95, which should deliver a “dramatic” depth of field and “next-level” low light performance, according to Nikon.

“This is why the Z mount was created. The Noct is a testament to Nikon’s commitment to optical innovation driven by more than a century of expertise,” said Jay Vannatter, Executive Vice President, Nikon Inc. “We promised a new dimension of optical performance for the Nikon Z series and NIKKOR Z lens lineup, and by announcing our fastest NIKKOR lens ever made, the NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct, we are making this claim a reality.”

Bringing the Noct-NIKKOR 58mm f/1.2 back with the NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct

The original Noct-NIKKOR 58mm f/1.2 was released back in 1977. 42 years later, Nikon is bringing the lens back to life with basing the NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct. The original was famous for reproducing point light sources as point images. The new iteration will boast “staggering low light ability,” according to Nikon.

The lens’s depth of field allows the camera it to capture “sharp” images with “beautiful” background blur. I can do this thanks to its focus plane and its shallow depth of field.

Additionally, usually when you shoot point light sources at maximum aperture, you will get sagittal coma flares. However, the lens will eliminate those flares across the full frame.

Design

Taking a look inside the Noct-NIKKOR 58mm f/0.95, it’s built out of 17 elements in 10 groups. Nikon says that this build will ensure “a well-balanced lens that delivers incredibly sharp results.” Users can also look forward to a larger-diameter ground aspherical lens element — which Nikon says is made from the finest glass with great surface accuracy.

For focusing, the lens has a focus ring that should allow for “accurate” manual focusing. The ring will allow for the right amount of torque and a large rotation angle, even with its shallow depth of field.

Additionally, the lens is made with an ARNEO Coat. The coat should provide anti-reflection properties that combat incident light reaching the lens surface from a vertical direction. Also, it has a fluorine coat the will repel dust, dirt and moisture.

Pricing and availability

The NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct will be out on October 31st for $7999.
