Product Description
A Versatile Microphone for Cameras and Video
With the SMX-30 you’ve always got the right microphone for the job. That’s because it is both a stereo microphone and a mono-shotgun microphone, allowing you to switch between the two on the fly. Plus with other great features like gain control, auto-on, a low cut filter, and of course awesome sound quality, the SMX-30 is sure to be a microphone you’ll always want to keep in your gear bag.
It's a Stereo Microphone
Use the stereo mode to capture rich, immersive audio that enhances the scene you're shooting. Great for nature scenes, musical performances, or any kind of action video.
And it's a Mono Shotgun Microphone
Mono mode uses a supercardioid shotgun microphone to really focus in on your sound source. Perfect for picking up dialogue in vlog style videos, or for "run and gun" interview situations.

Okay. For you who are wondering if you should get a Rode or an Azden, let me point out a few things. First, when they say the audio of the Rode mics are better, they are NOT. They are just different. This mic, the Azden SMX 30, is broadcast quality audio. And, yes, I do understand that it's hard to decide between a stereo and a mono mic. But why would you settle for one over the other when you can have the BEST of both worlds? Azden's SMX 30 is awesome in that you can change mics with the flip of a switch! Plus, what if you want both mics but can only afford one? Why limit yourself.
Now, let me tell you a story, one with a real life lesson. Over 30 years ago I had to write a composition for an English class. At that time, I decided to write a paper about how digital cameras would never beat film cameras. Boy, was I WRONG! Today I shoot with only digital cameras. So, when mirrorless cameras came out, I didn't make the same mistake twice. I got me a Sony A7. And I'm glad I did. So, if you're wondering what this has to do with the Azden, I'll tell you. Azden may not be as well known as Rode but you can bet I am NOT afraid of new companies with new and ever evolving technologies. In fact, I welcome them with open arms. They offer products that either meet or exceed Rode and they intend to keep up the battle with highly competitive price points.
You see, Rode is going to make a mic like the SMX 30 but unfortunately they won't be able to beat Azden's price point and by then Azden will have come out with another industry leading product. In other words... Azden leads. Everyone else follows.
I am very impressed with Azden's SMX 30. I prefer NOT to use the Low Cut Filter (unless absolutely necessary). There is plenty of bass in this mic and the +20 dB preamp makes this puppy shine!
I really love the mic's auto setting which turns on the mic automatically when it's connected to the camera and shuts off the mic when it's disconnected from the camera. That is a fantastic feature.
The Azden smx-30 is the best straight in camera mic I've tried till now. However, it doesn't work with my sound mixer (which I connect to my camera) even though the sound mixer works well with every single mic I tried it with except this one.
I always use preamps to higher the audio input. I never use the +20 feature that mics have because it creates a lot of hiss. This applies to all mics I've tried, including this one. The audio levels are pretty good, compared to other mics, even without the extra preamps or audio gain and you can use higher preamps in camera than with many other mics and it will still provide clear, clean sound with minimal hiss compared to other mics used at the same level of the camera's preamps. However, I still need higher audio levels so that I don't need to work on the volume in post. Meanwhile the Zoonm h6 was the only better, but much more expensive option, that fits the bill and the audio quality is better too. But it involves more than just putting the mic into the camera's hot shoe and plugging the 3.5 mm cord into the camera's mic port, which is simple and fast, two things I want very much from my equipment. However, sound (and image) quality is most important for my work so I will stick with the zoom H6 , but if I would be a blogger or need the mic for non-commercial work I would definitely go with the Azden smx-30.
