    This year at CES, we heard quite a bit about products coming out using USB 3.0 and/or Thunderbolt. Hard drives, card readers, monitors, even laptop docking stations. Thunderbolt is becoming more and more common in PCs, while the USB Promoter Group plans to update USB 3 in order for it to reach 10Gb/s, virtually eliminating the speed gap. Many devices come in one flavor or the other, but for some, you have a choice.

    Yesterday Videomaker’s own Jennifer O’Rourke wrote an article professing her love of analog media. While I respect and acknowledge her many good points, I just can’t get on board. I learned to edit video using the linear tape-to-tape method, and trust me, there are no rose tinted glasses here. The thought of having to go back to the days of capturing video from tape nearly gives me an anxiety attack. Tape vs film?

    Sometimes I really hate technology. OK. Maybe you think I'm an old fuddy-duddy, but technological changes really get me steaming sometimes. I'm no technophobe, but lately, it seems that just as soon as I learn the new updates to some software, they go and makes changes on me and I either have to update again, or buy fresh and start over.

    If you follow Videomaker closely, you've likely seen us use the terms raw video and uncompressed video. We might say “Camera A captures uncompressed video” or “Camera B shoots raw.” Hopefully we've never said “Camera C shoots uncompressed raw video.” While they sound similar, they do mean different things and shouldn't be used interchangeably.

    So what's the difference? Raw video is uncompressed, right? Well, it is, and raw video is always uncompressed. However, uncompressed video isn't always raw.
