Looking for Props for your next movie? Check out After Halloween Sales!
So I was at my local department store shopping for a storage bin and I stumbled upon my biggest pet peeve this time of year, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” a long row of Halloween items on sale while Christmas music blared happily overhead.
I always wish we could have a rest from exposure to both of these over-saturated events between Halloween and Thanksgiving, but I’m also a savvy shopper. Anyone who makes videos that might need movie props or makeup should consider the Halloween sale aisle. If you have a fake fight, you’ll need scars or makeup. If you have an ethereal fairy or wizard making magic, you’ll need tiaras and wands. This time of year you’re going to find wigs, fake swords, zombie makeup and more – all at 50% to 75% off. What a deal. Facial scars, skin putty and glue, fake teeth even fake blood props are all on sale – and you probably won’t find them again until next year.

Halloween is just around the corner. For many it’s time to carve pumpkins, hang the fake cobwebs, and consume so many “fun-sized” candy bars it stops being fun. For us movie lovers it means dusting off the old horror movie collection, popping some popcorn and clicking “play”.
There is a heap of scary movies one can choose from in order to be spooked each season; from blood-sucking vampires, flesh-eating zombies and relentlessly haunting spirits to the mildly frightful, but mainly laughable characters of the genre. Since I usually prefer to maintain the ability to sleep at night, I typically choose the comedic route when trying to get into the spirit of Halloween. However, there are times when a good scare is quite thrilling. Here’s what’s in my queue for this Halloween (in no particular order)…
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
The Shining (1980)
Beetle Juice (1988)
Ghostbusters (1984)
30 Days of Night (2007)
Zombieland (2009)
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Pet Semetary (1989)
28 Days Later (2002)
…I’m feeling pretty good about my line-up. However, I can’t help but feel I’m missing something; something that I can’t quite put my finger on. Maybe you can help…any suggestions?

It’s finally October, my favorite month of all! It’s the time of year when the sun turns to gold, shadows stretch across all surfaces, and dry leaves begin their dance along the roadside. With Halloween just around the corner it’s the perfect time to get those cameras rolling and shoot some zombies.
White Zombie, starring Bela Lugosi, marked the emergence of our interest in the living-dead and their insatiable hunger for the living. With Zombieland currently at the top of the box office, and grossing $25 million in its first weekend, there’s sure to be an onslaught of zombie movies in the days to come. JibJab has been a rite of passage for political campaigns (particularly presidential politics) for years, but there’s a lot of recent talk about the effect of Tina Fey impersonating Sarah Palin generating some of the highest ratings that Saturday Night Live has had in years… and, similarly, some rather amazing traffic figures for NBC’s web site.
Increasingly, we’re starting to wonder whether online videos are getting to the point where, like the sales of Halloween masks of the candidates, the candidate with the most hits wins. There’s a bit of precedent to this already, where the 2006 Virginia senate race appears to have been strongly influenced by a viral video of then-incumbent Senator George Allen making a racial slur at a supporter of his opponent, Jim Webb (one of the current senators from Virginia, having beaten Allen by a slim margin).
Could it be that politics are now decided largely by quick, but highly influential, videos for those of us with short attention spans? Is this a good thing for democracy? Is this evolutionary or devolutionary?
