The days of science fiction are over. It seems the ideas once thought to be impossible are now only several lab tests away from becoming reality (i.e., designer babies and steaks grown in petri dishes). On the video side of technology, we already have a complete convergence of digital technology on our hand-held devices, not to mention the ability to make paper-thin, “go-anywhere” digital displays. However, there are those who desire something just a little more portable than the fore mentioned. Lucky for them, they need not wait too long, for scientists are developing the most portable of all displays: the LED tattoo.
The brains at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Illinois, and Tufts University in Medford, MA, have combined their research to develop implantable silk-silicon electronics. These implantable electronics include silk-silicon LEDs that can be placed into the skin, as well as biocompatible electrodes that could work in conjunction with the nervous system. The intention is to apply this technology to medical devices, such as blood-sugar readings that would automatically appear on the skin. Philips’ Design Probe took a different approach to the obvious medical implementation. Their vision is a world of touch sensitive body art, or “interactive skin technology.” Read the rest of this entry »

So the Holidays are upon us, and as we reflect about the huge meal we’ll be consuming tomorrow, we can also think about how to unload a lot of excess weight… No, I don’t mean an after-meal purge, I mean all those video tapes gathering dust and wasting space in your cabinets, under the bed, on the top hidden shelf of the closet and pushed back in to the far reaches of the entertainment cabinet.
I recently read that one VHS tape takes one-sixth of a gallon of petroleum to make, and at one time video duplicators were processing 20 million of them a month. That’s 3 million gallons of petroleum. If true, that’s a lot of waste that can go somewhere else.

If you have a Palm Pre, you’re in luck. First off, because you don’t have my [expletive deleted] cell phone (which drops its connection excessively, usually whenever my wife needs to relay something crucial–and my phone company isn’t as helpful as I had hoped they would be in helping me find a solution), and second, because a new app called Precorder is now out, which will let you record video with your Pre’s camera–something that it was capable of all along hardware-wise, but was never previously exploited, until now.
The app is in an alpha (very preliminary) state right now, and it looks like you will have to perform some dark magic to actually install the application on your Pre (which must be running webOS 1.3.1), but once you do, you will be able to record 480×320 video at 30fps, with sound. You also get a choice of several MPEG-4 variants to record video with (MPEG-4, H.263, H.264/AVC), audio formats (AAC, AMRNB, MP3), container formats (MP4/3GP), media source (audio only, video only, both), and whether to turn on the LED for illumination.
Wanna see a sample clip? Head over to Pre Central, where you can see a sample (from YouTube, not a file directly from the Pre) and read more about the background about why webOS 1.3.1 was the enabler for this project.

It has been difficult to ignore the increase in viral video ad campaigns lately. If you haven’t noticed, viral videos have become a powerful advertising strategy for many corporations. Volkswagen created The Fun Theory, MicroBilt sponsors I Love Local Commercials, and Evian’s creepy roller skating babies helped make their Live Young campaign a viral success. A cleverly disguised T-Mobile advertisement does a great job at mimicking those low-quality, flash-mob-caught-on-tape videos. It takes two and-a-half minutes of watching the video before you realize you’ve been duped into watching an advertisement.
So, is this it? Is this the end of homemade viral videos? Can we even begin to compete with the millions of dollars that go into making and promoting these corporate viral video ad campaigns? Should we even bother?
Time Magazine’s recent article, YouTube Effect: Making Money from Viral Video, discusses the recent success people have had with their homemade viral videos. The makers of Keyboard Cat and David After Dentist, among others, have seized various opportunities to further market their successful videos, enabling them to earn tens of thousands of dollars each.
It’s becoming quite obvious that video-sharing sites and social media have become great tools for raking in the dough. And yes, corporations have figured this out, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we should just give up and allow Keyboard Cat to play us off, does it?

OK, folks… listen up! Here’s a challenge to VIDEO producers from a STILL camera manufacturer. As you’ve been reading in our magazine and on our site, the lines are merging between still and video shooting, and many still camera makers are making the cameras able to shoot good quality video, too. But, most people still think of STILL cameras as only being able to take – what we VIDEO shooters call – “Freeze Frames”.
Well, that’s no longer the case. And Nikon wants you to know about it by offering a contest with a prize of $100,000 for a great video… and it can be shot from any type of cam: video, still, or any brand.
