muvee to Launch autoProducer 4 at CES

by | December 30th, 2004

Reprinted from a muvee press release:

muvee Technologies, the pioneer and leader in automatic video production, is proud to officially launch muvee autoProducer 4 at International CES 2005. Featuring a revamped user interface for better workflow, improved automatic editing capabilities and a host of powerful new features, muvee autoProducer 4 ups the ante once again by delivering enhanced user control and unparalleled automatic video production technology that is remarkably fast, easy and fun.

magicMoments technology, which was first introduced in the previous version of the software, is now emphasized as a key aspect of muvee autoProducer 4. magicMoments is an innovative feature that complements muvee’s automatic editing capabilities by enabling users to quickly pre-select their most important scenes for inclusion using a simple Thumbs-Up button if they choose to do so. Unwanted shots can similarly be excluded with a Thumbs-Down button.

Dr. Pete Kellock, muvee’s founder and CEO, said, “magicMoments combines automatic editing with the ability to pick favorite moments in a revolutionary new way, and is just one of muvee’s unique, distinguishing features. We also offer more than 100 downloadable editing styles that are creatively themed for all sorts of occasions so that our users can give their videos impact and emotion, and create home videos that are great to watch over and over again.”

muvee autoProducer 4 now supports DivX, Windows Media, QuickTime and MPEG-4 video inputs, in addition to AVI, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 formats. Other new features include support for USB webcam and video capture, integrated DVD/VCD authoring, a video snapshot tool, more photo-centric effects and transitions, picture interleaving, style groupings, file drag-and-drop, and improved title and credit sequences, among others. More advanced production settings also allow users to specify the duration of each muvee, or to optimize it to fit either the selected video and pictures, or the music.

Dr. Kellock added, “Ever since we first introduced muvee autoProducer in 2001, automatic video editing has become a must-have offering in several video editing programs, and this is a great testament to what we’re doing. But muvee’s solution is much more radical: automatic editing is at the very heart of our revolutionary approach to video production. We’ve now capitalized on our expertise in this field to make version 4 even better for our users by giving them more functionality and control. Using muvee is like having an expert video editor in your computer doing the hard work for you – in fact, quite a few of our users are professional video editors, although I’m not sure if they all tell their clients that they’re using muvee! I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved in this latest release and anticipate more exciting developments down the road.”

The award-winning muvee autoProducer software is the first in the world to deliver an intelligent, automatic and effective video production solution that caters to the needs of the majority of home movie-makers. muvee lets even the most novice user instantly transform unedited video and pictures into compelling, professional-looking “muvees” – completely automatically in just a few quick steps that take only minutes, even seconds. Users simply select their video and pictures, add in their favorite music, and apply a production style. muvee’s Artistic Intelligence then analyzes the video, pictures and music to select the best footage highlights and determine the tempo and mood of the music, before automatically splicing everything together with style effects and transitions synchronized to the beat. The end result is a stylish production that can be saved and shared with family and friends in many popular formats.

muvee autoProducer 4 (currently for Windows XP only) is now available online at www.muvee.com for US$69.95.

Western Digital Announces Cooler-Running Hard Drives

by | December 20th, 2004

Reprinted from a Western Digital press release:

Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC) today announced that its WD Caviar family of hard drives, now available in capacities up to 320 GB, has been enhanced to significantly reduce operating temperatures. Cooler operating temperatures extend long-term reliability in the variety of applications that use these drives today. Technological advancements made in the company’s next-generation desktop-class drives also offer customers quiet operation, higher performance and larger capacity. Rotating at 7,200 RPM and offering either the EIDE or Serial ATA interfaces, the new WD Caviar products are available now in the distribution, retail and e-commerce channels and through OEMs.

Cool Drives and Enhanced Reliability

Heat is a major contributor to hard drive wear, and cool drive operating temperatures help increase long-term drive reliability. In testing its new WD Caviar drives against competitors’ comparable products, WD’s Functional Integrity Testing Lab (FIT Lab) results demonstrated that, through its advanced electronics and firmware design, WD has the lowest power consumption of any high-capacity desktop-class hard drive. Lowering the drives’ power consumption means the operating temperature of the new WD Caviar drives is much cooler which provides for enhanced drive reliability. Cool drives are increasingly important for today’s multi-drive and small-form-factor systems.

“Environmental demands on hard drives are increasing with the growing number of applications using rotating magnetic storage,” said Richard E. Rutledge, vice president and general manager of WD’s PC Components Group. “WD is always investigating new ways of extending drive reliability to new levels for end users, and the cool-running design of the WD Caviar drive family promotes long-term reliability even in challenging environments such as small-form-factor PCs, fanless consumer electronics devices and multi-drive storage systems.”

Whisper Quiet
Today’s PCs, digital video recorders and gaming machines are increasingly operated in environments where noise is less tolerated. WD minimizes WD Caviar drive noise to levels virtually below the threshold of human hearing with its WhisperDrive technology, which features a highly efficient power driver design. To reduce seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms, resulting in the drive operating more efficiently when accessing and writing data. WD is the originator of 8 MB buffer, having introduced the performance-boosting feature in its WD Caviar SE model in 2001. Now, with the next-generation WD Caviar, the company has advanced the caching algorithms of the WD Caviar family, resulting in faster performance than its previous-generation WD Caviar hard drives.

The new WD Caviar family includes 8 MB buffer and 2 MB buffer models and has been shipping in capacities of 40, 80, 120, 160, 200 and 250 GB; WD Caviar 320 GB capacity hard drives are currently in production with shipping commencing this week. All WD Caviar hard drives protect users’ data with WD’s exclusive Data Lifeguard embedded error detection and repair features, which automatically detect, isolate and repair problem areas that may develop over the extended use of the hard drive.

WD Caviar SE 320 GB drives will be available at retail stores next month. For customers who prefer the ease of online shopping, the new 320 GB capacity drives may be pre-ordered via the company’s online store (www.westerndigital.com/wdcaviar320). Customers who pre-order a WD Caviar SE 320 GB drive by Dec. 31, 2004, are eligible to receive free shipping. Full details of this promotion are available on WD’s online store. Suggested retail pricing for WD Caviar SE 320 GB capacity is $249 (USD).

Leitch Technology Corporation (TSX:LTV), a leading supplier of high-performance video systems for the professional television industry, announced today it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Inscriber Technology Corporation, based in Waterloo, Ontario. Inscriber is a privately held video software company that develops SD (Standard Definition) and HD (High Definition) television graphics and digital signage products for the broadcast and video post-production markets. The companies expect to close the transaction in early January 2005, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. The total purchase price is $18 million Cdn, including the assumption of $1.5 million in debt. The purchase will be funded through Leitch’s existing cash balances. Inscriber extends Leitch’s position in the market with a complementary product range focused on broadcast graphics, content branding and logo generation, enabling an Integrated Content Environment (ICE) that will streamline workflow for broadcast and media companies, the customer base currently served by both companies.

“Our customers will benefit from an extensive range of products that are complementary to our existing Leitch offering,” said Tim Thorsteinson, president and CEO of Leitch Technology. “This acquisition is one more step in our commitment to focus on broadcast television customers – providing them with technologically advanced, comprehensive television equipment solutions with premium service. Inscriber is expected to contribute approximately $14 million Cdn in revenue annually, with gross margins over 60 percent. They are expected to contribute positive earnings and will continue to operate out of Waterloo, Ontario, just southwest of Leitch’s Toronto-based offices.
