Olympus PEN – Stop Motion Video – A Nostalgic Trip Through Time

Every once in a while a cool video comes along that makes you just want to watch it over and over again.  Such is the case with this one – put together by Olympus celebrating 50 years of the little Pen still camera.

Although this is a still camera, the presentation appears to have been done using video editing skills. Like we’ve been talking about a lot lately, the lines between still cameras and video are blurring, and this stop-motion collection of more than 60,000 still photos is a great example of that.

All the images in this piece were shot one at a time on a still camera, then laid out side-by-side and reshot 1,800 times more, with the various backgrounds surrounding them, so they appear to be moving images. The creators also used an old time look to the first few decades of the “Life of the Pen”, to give a believable and nostalgic feeling of time passing by.

Although it looks like stop motion was used, we don’t know what program they used, but we recently saw a demonstration of Pinnacle’s new version 14 that has a simple stop motion technique application that would be fun to try.
