MPEG Streamclip
Quick and Fast: The video that comes out of this conveditor is the highest quality out of any I’ve used so far. Maybe that’s because this conveditor uses Apple codecs for encoding.
IMPORT FORMATS: AVI, MOV, MPEG, DV, VOB, MP4 and more!
EXPORT FORMATS: AVI, MOV (Quicktime), MPEG, DV
Where to get it: http://www.squared5.com/ Windows XP/Vista and Mac Only! Might work with Windows 2000 or Linux running WINE, maybe.
This is a great program! I like it’s encoding capabilities. The Quicktime codecs are higher quality than what VDub and Avidemux use, for sure! MPEG Streamclip is more for encoding than editing, from what I can tell, and that’s what I use it for. It supposedly can cut, join, trim and download movies.
My opinion is, use MPEG Streamclip when you can, and Avidemux when you can’t.
MPEG Streamclip also won Best Free Software of 2008 from Videomaker magazine! Go Here to find out more!
Quicktime: As mentioned, MPEG Streamclip uses Quicktime codecs, so you’ll need Quicktime for the program to even run. On the site, there are two options for Quicktime capabilities: the free Quicktime 7 player and Media Player Classic 1.81. I only got it to work with Quicktime 7 player, MP Classic was acting up. And if you have Quicktime Pro, I assume you’ll be just fine.
Tutorials: I found this program very easy to learn after messing around with it a little.
