In the near future, I plan to purchase a camcorder for the first time. I plan to use it for family history...reunions, interviews, as well as other family events...some indoor, some outdoor, and maybe some in low light. What recommendations can you give me, as to a good camcorder $600 or less?...and any other tips. Thanks.

There are many good sites with help on camcorder selection, among them this page on cams below $600:

I also have links to several on my camcorder page:

First of all, only consider MiniDV camcorders. VHS-C, SVHS-C, 8mm, Hi8 - these will not provide the image quality of MiniDV. What's more, they are analog formats not suited well to computer editing. Digital 8 should also be excluded. Sony's attempt to maintain compatibility with its legacy devices will likely end up on the shelf with your Betamax VCR.

    Next, try

You can search on "camcorder" and find listings by price range. What's more, you'll find ratings of online dealers. Another source of price and ratings info is

    Have fun with it.
