while searching for my next video camera (either the dvx100a or pd170) I noticed for about the same price JVC has a camera model JY-HD10U for around the same price. It comes with the same features I am looking for but with HD quality. Will a special system be needed or can premiere pro handle it? It seems like a better route being an HD camera

HD was the big theme at NAB this year. Every NLE now supports HD editing in some manner. Premiere Pro 1.5 has this option I believe! Now here is why HD isn't practical yet. Those two non-HD cameras you were talking about both had higher optics than the JVC. The JVC only has 1 CCD while the others have 3. And as you may know, 3 CCD's produce more vibrant colors and an overall better picture. Now think about your target audience... How many of them will have the HDTV's to take advantage of your footage? For those that don't have HD, they will be watching the same old 720x480i footage shot from a 1 chip. My advice is to 1) go with the DVX-100a or PD170 over the JVC now, or 2) wait until they come out with a 3CCD HD camera. Sony is developing one as we speak, as i'm sure, are all the other camera company's.
