I want to purchase a DV camera, but there are so many choices out there I don't know where to turn. Hopefully some of you knowledgeable guys can help me out.
I have been in the TV business as a Newscast Director for the last 10 years and I have 9+ years experience shooting in Betacam format. I am looking for a camera to shoot documentaries that will provide a professional look without the Betacam price. I am very experienced with ENG lighting and audio techniques and I can take a lesser camera and still get a good pictures and sound. However, I want a good camera to start with and keep my babysitting to a minimum.

I am looking for a camera in the DV format that offers manual zoom, focus and iris control. I would also like to be able to set white balance manually. If the camera has a built in LCD screen, I would be willing to forget the manual white balance. Finally, I want a camera that will accept an outside mic (adjustable levels would be nice). My budget is in the $1,000 neighborhood.

I know I am asking too much for my budget, but I am willing to spend more. This is just a starting point. However, if there is a camera that has even some of the features that I mentioned at a lower price, I would be interested too.

Thank you for any help anyone could provide. Most sites I go to are just online store that don't show me everything that I want to know about certain models. Thanks again.

If you want to stay under $2000, you should consider either the Sony DSR-PDX10 (Videomaker's 2003 Camcorder of the Year ($2000 - $3000). The street price is less that 2 grand. The other possibility is the Canon GL2, which has good manual control capability. You may have to buy an XLR mic adapter to use an external mic.
