What's a serious hobbyist to do?

Hey all. I could really use some feedback. I'm just a graphic design student killing time until I can afford film classes, but I'm serious about wanting to do movies for a living... Eventually. As of now, my only camera is a Sony DCR-TRV130. It was my first camera, and if only I had known then what I knew now, perhaps I wouldn't be having this dilemma.

After looking at the latest buyer's guide in videomaker, I fall under the "serious hobbyist" category. I'm looking into getting a new camera, but I really have no idea where to begin. All I know is that my current camera has much to be desired when it comes to manual controls... I've since realized the importance of manual shutter speed, white balance, and an external mic jack. Are there any cameras that offer those features at a modest price? At the moment I've only got about 500 dollars to spend which I know really narrows down my options... But I'd rather save and be able to set my own white balance and shutter speeds than have to go with a preset. :P

If anyone out there has any thoughts on how to get a decent camera relatively cheaply, I'm all ears. Well, eyes. Also, if you have suggestions on *which* camera would be a decent one, I'd love to hear. I'm still partial to sony, despite the electrical problems my camera has developed. If I find that shorts are a common ailment to sony's cameras, I'd have no problem switching to something more productive. :-S

Thanks for taking the time to read this rambling message even if you don't post... and a big thanks to those of you who *do* post.

It quiet funny this question seems to be the one that I always answer with a lot of jargon with, but I go straight to the point. If you buy a fancy camera with bells and whistles, then think about how you are going to make your money back, I have friends that have 3000 dollar cameras and they get their money back by doing weddings for about $600 each week and they have made their money back and now they are up grading which means they have two cameras and they have the option of shooting the football which brings in more money. In you suitution fine your camera is playing up, no need to buy anything 3 chip because your not making money for it, what the heck, why not get a still camera function with that video camera, so that you have what you want for what your doing, But the best thing to what cameras in your budget is to help out other people with their films and that way people will let you borrow their baby for the day. This way if you give a little some one will give a little back. If you can get out there man, you won't need a camera and better still you'll get better operating each one, differnet make and models
    Cheers Mike
