I'm an AV coordinator in a High School and have finally convinced the higher ups to kick in some money to move into the world of digital editing. We currently use Panasonic 1/2" video editing equipment for our video classes. As you can imagine it's getting old and I want to move into digital editing off of a pc or stand alone equipment. We would need to buy the pc as well as the editing hardware. Any good suggestions? My budget on this is in the 2-3k range.

You will get all kinds of replies to your question. First, I would look around you local area to see who could help you get the most bang for your buck. Try videoguys.com for a basic outline for your PC. Get all you can get, cause, if your school system is like most, you will not get any "new" equipment for a while.

Adobe Premier, Pinnacle Liquid, Avid Xpress Pro and Sony Vegas 4 + DVD are the current "big dogs". I just bought Vegas and have found it to be a delight. Vegas will also run well on a humble computer. The others I listed run best on the latest high horsepower computers.

Don't waste your time with any of the low end editing programs, most of them are good for limited home use. However, for your 2-3k budget, get can get a lot of pc and program.

    Hope this helps.

Check out tigerdirect.com. Go to their [desktop computer] -> [Workstations] section. They offer dual-processor Xeon workstations for $1600. Add a DVD burner for another $100.00. Pick up Vegas 4 + DVD. With your scholastic discount you could get it for approx. $260.00. Buy a 19" CRT monitor for $150.00. They're way cheaper than LCD's, and more appropriate for editing videos. This would be a kick-ass pro editing system for around $2000.00.
