    Is it possible/practical to transfer digital video from a camera to a PC (Windows) on USB 2.0? I don't have a 1394 card on this machine (yet). I have Pinnacle Studio 8 and Premier 6.0 available.

    NO!!!! USB is not good for video transfer. Do what you have to do to get firewire.

    You can do video tranfer using USB. It is possible but is not the best solution for video capture. Firewire can transfer more data via the firewire cable into your computer. But if that's all you have just get a device that allows you to capture USB into you computer workstation.

    Here are some products:

    Pinnacle Studio MovieBox 9 USB 2.0

    ADS Technologies Instant Video MPX (USBAV-708)

    Firewire = 400Megabits per second
    USB 2.0 = 480Megabits per second

    However, USB has to control the device which means some of the bandwidth goes to controlling and overhead and can mean that video data gets interrupted which would be bad.

    Use Firewire to get the data from your camera to the computer.

    Incidentally, I routinely capture via firewire to my pc onto a USB2.0 harddrive and have never once, in dozens of hours of film, had a problem.
