Video software - FREE??

   A friend has asked me if I can find some video edting software for free that can truncate wma files and save them as quicktime .mov.
   
   This is for domestic use so he can edit his favourite tv car show. Is there any free demo's or trials he could use or indeed any free software to do this. He is familiar with software and is a web designer.
   
   Any tips??
