VHS-to-Hi8 generational loss

I have a quantity of VHS recordings that date back up to 15 years. While these recordings are still playable, I've been dubbing them to Hi8 with my Sony CCD-TRV65 camcorder to have safety masters for archival purposes. I'm using Fuji metal-evaporated Hi8 tape and S-video connections from my VCR to assure the best possible picture & sound quality is captured. My question is this: since VHS is approx. 240 lines of resolution, and Sony's Extended Resolution (XR)Hi8 is 400+ lines of resolution, am I losing any quality? (I do not currently own a DV camcorder or DVD burner, although I do plan to buy a standalone DVD recorder/player in the near future, so digital is not an option at the moment.) Any advice on dubbing settings/enhancements is also appreciated.

Yes, you are losing some quality, it can't be avoided totally but it sounds like you are losing the least amount possible using consumer gear.

Be sure to save your original VHS masters and use them again when you get a DVD recorder. These should still be of higher quality than your 2nd generation Hi8 copies.
