e-SATA or USB 3.0?
Trails Ventures, LLC.
Absolutely e-SATA for semi and pro work. I actually hate USB and am sorry Firewire 800 didn't catch on.
wow, I didn't even know they made USB 3.0. Does it still transfer data is bursts or packets or does it transfer in a steady stream like firewire?
Don't forget about ethernet though. You can connect SANs via ethernet and at work we have a Drobo that connects via ethernet as well. I think some RAIDs do too
USB 1.1 for me - gives me plenty of time to browse these forums.
(This is a joke - e-SATA all the way.)
You say that Firewire 800 didn't catch on. Apple just came out with their new models a few months ago. They all include Firewire 800 ports.
It is a great idea, but you are correct. No stores carry adaptors and no new devices come with it built in.
What is this USB 3.0. I've never heard of this.
From a PCWorld Article:
USB 3.0, also known as SuperSpeed USB, provides the bandwidth to transfer data at close to ten times the speed of USB 2.0 and offers improved power management, according to the USB Implementers Forum.
And from a PCMAG Article:
Technically, USB 3.0 runs at 5 gigabits per second, compared with USB 2.0's 480 megabits per second, so you would think it would be 10 times faster. But remember that those speeds are theoretical maximums, not what you see in the real world, because of the overhead in the way the protocol works.
Another thing to consider is your hard drive has to be able to read the data fast enough to justify those high transfer rates. One hard drive by itself cannot. One hard drive by itself doesn't even read data at 480mbps, USB 2.0's transfer rate.
So if you're not going to get a RAID (and I mean a big RAID probably set up for RAID 0), then it's probably not even worth getting USB 3.0, that is, if they start putting that interface on RAIDs.
Rob/Crafters,
I read you LaC. The whole 'drive not reading the transfer rate' kills the whole prospect up front. It's just like Sine and I discussed with the 3D gear, "just more crap their putting out to make us spend money on." Truthfully, I wish USB would go away but it does have its uses. I just don't like it for data transfer with professional gear. Firewire, Ethernet and now eSATA are soooo much faster, better and more reliable. But USB is cheap. That's why it will continue to haunt us. I'm sorry to see Firewire losing ground, but with everything going solid-state it's uses are dwindling.
Yes sata is best usb is no more attractive behind of Sata
