Is it advisable to use the same computer that use for te bulk of your editing ( such as a g5 ) for everyday practices like internet services as well?

No. I mean mine is connected to the net so I can grab scripts and images but it's purpose is for editing.
I have a pc for the client so they can surf or whatever while I do my thang.

It's not advisable, but if your editing work is limited you may be able to live with the added troubleshooting when things go wrong and the options are so broad. If you do any amount of multimedia work, your CPU will often be maxed out and your system basically unavailable for anything else. It is a luxury to have two separate systems but it's a great way to go. My Internet and general purpose system is a PIII 450, on which I briefly edited before designing a system dedicated to content creation. I can always work or entertain myself on it while the editing system churns away.

I use my laptop for everything. It's probally not the best but I can edit and surf at the same time if I wanted to. I'm sure it's better to have a seperate machine for web surfing etc. but I just don't have the space for two computers. My setup works freat for my needs. I guess it all depends on your needs and how dangerous you're willing to live life (ha ha).

My PC cost $450, and I do everything on it, and it works fine, but every computer is different.

To give you an Idea of what my computer has, here are its specs

AMD Athlon 2400+ (operates at 2 Ghz)
128 MB RAM (It is pretty slow, you should get at least 512 MB)
    40 GB Hard Drive Standard

Additional 120 GB Maxtor Hard Drive for media
    a6 MB Video Card
    CD-RW Drive
    Maxxtor IEEE1394 POrt

Sorry for going on and on, but I wanted to illustrate how you dont NEED a $2900 Turnkey editing system.
