I am doing a lot of outdoor video shoots, Would a zoom mic be a good choice, or would a wireless system be better and if so are there any relatively inexpensive setups. Have you ever heard of someone using a minidisc recorder to capture sound?

In very general terms, Travis, when you can't get within a couple of feet of the sound source you want something like a shotgun mic. I put one on my VX2000 last year and was very pleasantly surprised with the bird songs and other natural sounds it picked up when that wasn't my intent. Many people use minidisk recorders for audio. The main issue is keeping sync with video. If you don't need that it's an economical solution, but very few have mic-in now and I'm not sure any allow digital transfer to your PC.

Thanks for the advice. Do you have any experience with wireless lavalier systems? There is a sony system for 149.99. I shoot Big wall Rock climbing and I will some times be farther away. Which shotgun mic did you buy? Synchronizing video and audio perfectly is not really a problem. Do you know if you can download audio from a mini disc to Premiere?

My own experience with wireless mics is limited and the opinions of experienced users vary, as usual. The safe route is a true diversity UHF system, but if you're in the middle of nowhere VHF is probably not all that risky.
I bought an inexpensive Azden SGM-X, made for mounting on a miniDV cam (shorter barrel than most). I mount mine on a miniRover to keep some distance from camera noise, and I use a Beachtek unit under my VX2000.
I can't imagine being able to import mini disc into Premiere, unless you can feed the analogue output to a camcorder first, then capture via firewire. I don't know the physical output connections on mini disc well enough to be sure. Often people resort to using the headphone jack as the output source but there must be a way to get cleaner source than that.
