Sony VX2000 Audio scratchy sound help/advice

    I have a new to me (but used) Sony VX2000.  Picture quality is great, but when using the Audio on board microphone, I get a scratchy sound every few seconds when speaking.  In other words no scratchy sound is made when there is no audio being recorded.  I've tried adjusting audio levels, but this does not change the scratchy sound.   It does not seem to register when I use a mic plugged in to the unit.

    

   Thoughts, ideas?

   dirty jack?  bad cable?  bad mic? could be anything
