I have one. Get an external mic, and tape noise is not a problem. The picture is cleaner, and clearer then my VX2000, and it doesn't have that annoying blue hue to everything. The chips are smaller.. so you have to make sure you don't get everything in your depth of feild is focus all the time. Also, low light can be a problem... but you can turn down your AGC to 6db to clean it up quite a bit. It's a fun camera because you get AWESOME video, and it's small enough to sneak into the movie theater. Everything has a manual option. And like you said.. for the money.. it's a totally good deal. The GL-2 has a bit better audio.. but check the specs on canondv.com, they low light is only better by 1lux. i love my 950.. I take it everywhere.. you will love the touch screen.. it makes great "snap focus" moves. You can touch on your screen what you want to be in focus.. then simply touch something in the background and it puts it into focus...
you can't beat it for the price. Just get some lens filters, external mic, and you are set.
Everyone says the low light is a problem.. it's really not at all. I shoot at night on the streets all the time with it.. it's great. The video looks real.. like what you would see at night.. with my VX2000 you can tell it's night.. but it doesn't look like you are really there... it looks like video at night like on cops... get the damn camera! I have used it for 3 weddings, and 2 training seminar tapings... never had a single issue with light. 2 of the wedding receptions were outside at night, and the training semenars I taped... they had projectors going and the lights were going off, and on.. and the cameras automatic settings are lightning quick. I think for $2000.00 the 950 is an awesome camera even with out all the accessories.
