When I was in high school, I thought it was much more important to get a four-barrel carburator and a floor-shifter than any editing gear. Oh well, "editing", back then, was pretty much just cut and splice any way.
Seriously though, there are so many factors that come into play - like software. Not to mention the fact that most editors are also shooters, which opens the door to other hardware considerations.
Summertime brings the opportunity to flip hamburgers at your local fast food hut and earn those computer dollars. Until then, why not contact the college or university where you intend to pursue your editing education and discuss this with your future professor?
