Shotgun Mike + Boom Pole

   Does anyone have any suggestions about buying this gear?
   
   Are there any brands I should stay away from, or are there any brands you would suggest?
   What are your opinions on buying them separately or as a combo (mike/boom)?
   About buying it used? (I'm a student with a modest budget here...)
   
   I'm looking for one with an XLR connection, and would be using it mostly for narratives or documentaries.

   Our school got a pair of Audio Technica ATR897 shotgun mics and a pair of RODE boom poles. They work out quite well, very high quality. The mics are $250 apiece, not sure about the poles.
