I'm a schoolteacher trying to get better sound for my students' plays and interviews. Have been looking at Azden and Rode mics on the internet in the $150-250 price range. Do any of you have experience or opinions about those mics or any other brands that will give good sound and take school kinds of hazardous duty? They need to have XLR plugs because of long cord runs.

    Thanks,
    John

I bought the lower priced Azden shotgun mic and found that the cheapo mount that comes with it transfers and even boosts the camcorders motor noise (tried it on three different models) to the point of making the mic unusable. My wife created a home-made mount with sponge rubber and velcro that works fine (but looks odd). I'm thinking of shelling for their $29 mount in hopes it will isolate the mic from camera noises.

As far as the mic itself (and this is not the XLR one), it works just fine.

Which mic exactly did you buy? I'm looking into getting the Azden SGM-X shotgun mic. They do have one that's chepaer, so I just wanted to make sure I'm not getting the one that you had trouble with.

I think it's the SGM-X, but like I said - this has nothing to do with the mic. The problem is the shock mount. I did shell out the thirty bucks for the better mount and it's fine now.

Well, I think I'm gonna go for it, and get the mount as well. Thanks for the info.
