I recently purchased the Panasonic AG-DVC30 camcorder. Going through the setup, they discussed setting the User's Bit. The user's manual said that the user's bit is so you can store 8-digit information (such as the date and time) in the hexadecimal format on the tape's sub code track.

Can someone translate this for me? I've never heard of this feature before so I'm not sure the value or how even to use it.

    Thanks,
    Gary

Don't feel bad about having difficulty with this one! I think something must've gotten lost between translations.

First off, it's a "user's byte", not "bit". A "byte" consists of eight "bits", but none of this computer jargon should have been used in the manual. Oh, and they're NOT saving it in hexadecimal either! Hex is a number system that goes from zero "0" to fifteen "F" as in: 0123456789abcdef. But again, this is totally irrelevant.

Instead, it should have been worded something like this -

There are several (up to eight) different settings you can adjust and the camera will "remember" them. Each setting is either an "on" or "off"; "yes" or "no" setting.
