      eh...clever, but the secret to a smooth pan isn't a rubber band. it's practice. We had some crappy tripods at my college (and some good ones for the higher end cameras), but they were fine if you took the time to practice.

    6.  I have used this trick for over a year now. The benifit I get from it is the smooth starts and stops of the pans and tilts.

      And yes, as with other camera motions it still requires practice and a few takes for that good shot.

      If your tripod doesn't pan too smoothly, try putting in a longer pan and tilt handle...it's all about leverage and extra control. and it'll cost all of $5 for the aluminum tube. I tried it years ago and was amazed at the difference....I grant you the rubber band is seriously economical!!!!
