Is there a program, or hardware or something I can use to get video from a DVD and copy it to my desktop so I can work with it in my video editing program?

Canopus Procoder will convert the DVD VOB files to the AVI format. HOWEVER, if you plan on doing so from a Hollywood released DVD, it won't. Your source DVD can NOT have a copyguard on it.

Also, because DVDs are a compressed file format, your avi file will only look as good as the compressed file. When you are done editing and compress again, you'll lose even more quality.

Cinematize 2.0 will do it cheaply, but your edited file will not look as good as your compressed video, no matter what you use if it is edited and reencoded. Artifacts will especially be evident where there was movement, panning, etc.
