Production Monitor questions

I'm in the market for a (NTSC) production monitor to hook-up to my new XPS in addition to the M992 Dell PC monitor I already have--for professional post production work. I got the top specs on the XPS (ATI Radeon 9800 XT with tv out and dvi). Question: What inputs should I be looking for on a production monitor? Do they all have the same inputs? I don't want to get a professional monitor and find out this card won't hook into the monitor. And can someone suggest a 13-17 inch production (not a consumer TV or PC monitor) monitor in the under $700 range? I only have two in mind at the moment: a Sony PVM-14L1 and a JVC TM-H1700GU model.

    Dale,

Generally speaking, you don't really want to hook your NTSC monitor up directly to your computer card.

The whole POINT of using a professional NTSC monitor is to see what's actually going to tape. So most people hang their NTSC monitor off the outputs of their RECORD DECK.

I don't know about your particular computer configuration - whether you're running Firewire, some form of transcoded Analog IO, or even SDI, but the point is that you want your monitor looking at your signal flow AFTER all the transcoding and A/D stuff is done.

Your mastering deck is at the end of the chain. It will likely have a digital to analog translation function built in. So all that's required is a simple video connection between the deck output and your NTSC monitor's input and you're good to go.

    Good luck with your setup.

    Bill,

is the Canopus ADVC100 or ADVC300 what you're talking about as better solutions? Now, I have to decide which of those two are best.

A good pick would be the JVC 10" TMA101GU Broadcast Monitor

    Dale,

Sorry, I operate a Mac shop and since I work exclusively in DV, I don't use 3rd party cards for video processing - just the stock computer.

Since I don't use those products, I'm not qualified to comment on them.
